Civil rights icon John Lewis coming to Dayton to push early voting

Civil rights icon U.S. Rep. John Lewis is coming to Dayton Friday to get out the vote for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Lewis, D-Georgia, will hold a rally from 2-3 p.m. outside Sinclair Community College Building 10 and then lead a march to the Montgomery County Board of Elections for early voting.

Lewis will be joined in Dayton by U.S. Senate candidate and former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Columbus, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, Ohio House Democratic Leader Fred Strahorn and Dayton civil rights leader Jessie Gooding. Also scheduled to appear are Rhine McLin, a former Dayton mayor and current Ohio Democratic Party vice chair and state party Chairman David Pepper.

Lewis worked with Martin Luther King Jr throughout the 1960s and was injured during the historic Selma march in 1965. He has served in Congress for nearly 30 years.

This summer he spoke to the Ohio delegation at the Democratic National Convention, telling them that early voting is critical and this state are crucial to the presidential election.

“Because it is Ohio, it is Ohio,it is Ohio,” Lewis said.
