Morgan, a Democrat, has been employed by the board since spring 2013.
Board member Jose Lopez said the vote was “done on the initiation of the Democratic Party … He (Morgan) is their designee.”
“Ultimately the Democratic Party has decided it didn’t have confidence in Eric and doing his job anymore,” said board member Ryan King. He and Lopez are Republican board members.
Democrat Dean Tamplin said Morgan was an at-will employee and it would be fair to say the party lost confidence. He and other board members said they wished Morgan well in the future.
The job termination was effective immediately.
Morgan could not be reached for comment.
The board also voted to eliminate the position at least until a new board takes office in March. A replacement would be designated by the Democratic Party.
Bev Kendall, a Republican, remains as the elections director. She said information on the replacement process would be collected for the board.
The four-person elections board is one member shy with the year-end retirement of Democrat Kelly Gillis.
Tamplin and Lopez are leaving the board when their terms end next month.
Democrat Dave Fisher attended the Jan. 19 board meeting, saying he was appointed by the party to take the position previously held by Gillis. The appointment has to be approved by the Secretary of State. Fisher said the party also nominated Audrey Gillespie for the board.
The Republicans have not nominated a replacement for Lopez, but plan to meet in February, John “Bud” O’Brien, party chairman, said.
