Wright State, 6 other Ohio colleges ranked ‘best for vets’

Wright State University has been recognized as one of the best four-year universities for veterans to attend.

Wright State ranked 125th on a list of best colleges in the Military Times, a publication for service members and their families. The Military Times surveyed more than 500 colleges for its annual ranking, according to WSU.

The survey asked colleges and universities to document an array of services, special rules, accommodations and financial incentives offered to students with military ties and to describe aspects of veteran culture on campus.

Military Times also considered veteran and military student offerings and rates of academic achievement.

“These young men and women have done remarkable things in service to their country,” said Seth Gordon, director of Wright State’s Veteran and Military Center in a press release. “For some of them, the sacrifice has required them to receive extra support while in school because, compared to others in their peer group, they have developed different needs.

“Having others around that understand their commitment and in many cases, sacrifice, is important.”

Wright State was the only Dayton-area university that made the list. Of the seven Ohio colleges on the list, Wright State was rated the lowest while Bowling Green State University ranked the highest at 46th. Ohio State ranked 104th.

In March, Wright State earned the No. 1 ranking in 2016 by Military.com and CollegeRecon for “Best Veteran Programs.” For several years running, G.I. Jobs and Military Advanced Education have honored the university by designating it as military friendly, according to the university.

Last week Wright State announced it is starting a $100,000 graduate school scholarship fund for members of the Ohio National Guard. The scholarship fund was modeled after one the university has had in place with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base since 2014.
