A bird and two cars caused thousands to lose power this weekend

Powerful thunderstorms caused power outages in several thousand homes across the Miami Valley on Friday, as they often do, but some outages in the area weren’t caused by severe weather conditions.

Nearly 3,000 homes in Huber Heights lost power early today, when a car split a pole at the intersection of Powell and Endicott roads around 5:45 a.m. After nearly 3 hours, power had been restored to all but 10 homes, according to a DP&L outage map.

That wouldn’t be the only case this weekend where thousands lost power unexpectedly.

Early Saturday morning, Dayton Power & Light crews worked to restore power to nearly 5,500 homes affected by outages in Greene County. Those outages were caused by storm damage and a single-car crash that took out a high-tension power pole on Jasper Road in New Jasper Twp.

Saturday night, The Medical Center at Elizabeth Place off Edwin C. Moses Boulevard in Dayton experienced a small-scale outage by comparison, leaving the building and 162 neighboring homes without power. The building was able to use a backup generator to maintain power, as crews were initially confused as to what caused the outages.

That is until Dayton Power & Light confirmed a bird damaged an air-break switch, causing Elizabeth Place and 162 customers to lose power for nearly an hour.
