Package at U.S. Post Office on Salem Avenue, Dayton, not explosive

DAYTON – UPDATE @ 9:27 p.m.:  A package found at the Dayton View U.S. Post Office on Salem Avenue bore strange markings but was not explosive, based on X-rays taken at the scene, Dayton police Lt. Mark Ponichtera said.

Police, fire and Bomb Squad members don't know what the package is, he said.

FIRST REPORT

Police and fire have blocked traffic to at least one street near the Dayton View U.S. Post Office, in the 500 block of Salem Avenue.

The Dayton Bomb Squad is on scene as well.

We’re hearing that a suspicious package has been found there, but it’s clear whether the package is inside or outside the building.

Police and fire crews have been on scene since just after 8 p.m.

Traffic on North Avenue and at the intersection with Richmond Avenue has been blocked. That is the area at the rear of the post office.

Salem Avenue, on the west side of the building, has not been blocked.
