Operation coverup underway

The Miami County Sheriff’s Office and Sunset Cleaners are accepting children’s coats in good condition for distribution to needy children in the county. Coats will be accepted at the Troy, Piqua and West Milton Sunset Cleaners and at the Sheriff’s Office until Oct. 23. For questions, call 937-440-6078.

Food drive ahead

The Vandalia-Butler Food Pantry will hold its annual food drive Oct. 14-15. Volunteers will go door to door Oct. 14 dropping off shopping bags for people to fill with food item donations. Those wanting to donate should leave the bag on their front porch Oct. 15. Donations also can be left Oct. 15-21 at Fire Station 1, 8705 Peters Pike, or the Recreation Center.

Meeting on retire-rehire set

The Vandalia City Council will hold a public meeting Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in council chambers in the Municipal Building, 333 James Bohanan Drive, to discuss the proposed retirement and retiring of Jon Crusey as city manager.

Build a bat box

A Bat Box Workshop will be offered at Brukner Nature Center on Oct. 15 from 2-4 p.m. Ohio is home to 11 species of bats. Call the center to register for the workshop and reserve a bat box for $30 by Oct. 14 at 5 p.m. The program is free for Brukner members and $5 for nonmembers. Ceramic works on display

The Troy-Hayner Cultural Center will host Cooperative Works by ceramic artists Kevin Russell and Richard Paldino through Nov. 26. The exhibit is free. In a team effort, one artist begins a pottery piece and then turns the work-in-progress over to the other artist who completes the creative process. Not so scary party set

The Milton-Union Public Library will host a “Not So Scary” party on Oct. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m. The program will include a costume showing by participants and discussions about trick-or-treat safety tips, listen to an interactive story and play Halloween bingo with prizes.
