Major change to Ohio gun laws takes step forward

Ohio lawmakers voted 69-24 on a controversial change in law for people who have a license to carry a concealed weapon. It covers the situation when a license holder is pulled over on the road by a police officer.

Under current law, the license holder must promptly inform the officer that they have a license for a concealed weapon and that they have the weapon with them.

The proposal, which now heads to the Senate, relaxes that requirement. Instead, the driver of the vehicle must only inform the officer about their weapon if the officer asks for their identification. At that point, they must hand over their driver’s license and proof of their concealed carry permit, or verbally inform the officer of their permit.

The bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Scott Lipps, R-Franklin, Rep. Nino Vitale, R-Urbana, Rep. Kyle Koehler, R- Springfield and Rep. Bill Dean, R- Xenia.
