Man charged after chain-reaction, 5-vehicle crash on I-75 in Butler Co.

UPDATE @ 5:55 a.m.

Speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a five-vehicle crash that shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 75 for hours in Butler County Tuesday morning.

State troopers and medics were first dispatched to Interstate 75 just north of Ohio 129 around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday on a reported multi-vehicle crash, investigators with the Hamilton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said in a media release.

Investigators said an initial investigation found a 2014 Hyundai sedan, driven by 25-year-old Michael Samartini, of Centerville, rear-ended a Jeep, sending both vehicles off the left side of the road and into the concrete median. The Jeep came to a rest after the crash, but the Hyundai sedan traveled back across the roadway and hit a second Hyundai in the rear that was traveling in one of the center lanes.

State troopers said a semi attempted to avoid the crash, but hit the sedan driven by Samartini, overturned, and came to a rest on its side, blocking three of the four lanes of Interstate 75.

A motorcycle was also struck by the debris from the crash but the operator was able to come to a safe stop, state troopers said.

The drivers of both Hyundai sedans, the semi, and motorcycle operator were transported to Atrium Medical Center for treatment of injuries, all believed to be non-life threatening.

The driver of the Jeep was treated and released at the scene.
