Neighbors rescue 2 from fire that burns 5 trailer homes in Clark County

UPDATE @ 9:14 p.m.: A scream led to the rescue of an elderly woman and a neighbor from heavy fire in Bethel Twp. that destroyed the woman's trailer home and damaged four others.

"The little lady inside, she wasn't able to move very well at all," said a neighbor, Cindy Napier. "We got her walker, got her scootin.' She's OK. Everybody's OK."

The scream came from the little lady's niece, who was cutting the grass of the home in the 12,000 block of Winnona Avenue in the Fairway Terrace mobile home park, when the fire broke out.

Bethel Twp. Fire Chief Jacob King said five trailers in all were affected -- the one where the fire began was destroyed; the siding on two trailers on either side melted; two other trailers across the street were damaged. The Red Cross has been called to help the two women, who have been displaced.

The cause is under investigation, Chief King said. A fire investigator has been called in to trace the fire's origin and cause.

King said neighborhood residents told arriving fire crews that one person reportedly trapped in one of the trailers was able to get out on his own.

Napier, who lives on Rhonda Drive across from the Winnona Avenue trailer that was destroyed, said she and the neighbor who led the little lady to safety pounded on the door to wake the neighbor thought to have been trapped.

Napier said she wasn't afraid.

"I was just worried about them," she said of the three residents directly affected by the fire. "The flames came all the way out to the street where her car is even destroyed," Napier said of the niece.

"We just thank God that nobody got hurt," Napier said.
