Fire at Bennington Drive apartments, Harrison Twp., displaces residents

UPDATE @ 9:02 p.m.: Occupants of a four-unit apartment building on Bennington Drive will be displaced because of a fire in one that produced a lot of smoke and sent one person to a hospital, Harrison Twp. Battalion Chief Sean McNeil said.

The cause of the fire in the second-floor unit is under investigation, he said.

Crews arrived to heavy smoke, but were able to contain the damage to the one unit. The battalion chief estimated that the damage to the building and contents ranged from $5,000 to $20,000.

The occupant of that unit, believed to have been asleep at the time of the fire, has been taken to Grandview Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, McNeil said.

There was one other occupant in the building who was not injured. Red Cross officials were called to assist the residents in finding temporary living arrangements.

Apparently, there are no smoke detectors in the building and McNeil stressed that everyone should have working smoke detectors in their homes. Many fire departments give them away, he said.
