Dayton landfill odors prompt concern in Moraine

Moraine residents say odors from a Dayton landfill are impacting their breathing and forcing them indoors.

The Stony Hollow Landfill on South Gettysburg Road is the source of complaints about a stench residents and Moraine officials say has been lingering in the city.

“Basically, we feel like we’re prisoners in our own home,” Moraine resident Kevin Howard said. “We can’t open up the windows. We can’t sit outside. We can’t have cookouts.”

Moraine residents complained earlier this year about the odors from Stony Hollow, and Moraine and the landfill to set up a complaint filing system.

Moraine City Manager David Hicks the digging of new wells at the landfill is the source of the problem.

Hicks said he has met with officials from Stony Hollow, the city of Dayton and regulatory agencies. He urged residents to continue lodging complaints.
