The officers are temporarily sworn as U.S. Marshals and have been instructed in proper use of force procedure for the event.

“It’s at the request of the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C.,” said Lt. Gregg Gaby. “I don’t think there’s an officer that doesn’t really want to go … it’s really an honor to represent the city of Dayton and come here.”
Being selected for the detail is based on seniority, Gaby said, and the honor is the same no matter who is assuming office. Still, working the inauguration comes with an expectation of a full day of work.

“We’ll be on post way before all the crowd is allowed in,” Gaby said. “We’ll be up way before the sun comes up.”
On Wednesday, Dayton city officials said participation in the inauguration will have no budget or safety impact back home.
This is the department’s fourth inauguration detail.
