Earthquake insurance: Something you may want to consider

The devastating earthquake in Mexico City may have you thinking about the earthquake risk in the Miami Valley and whether or not your home and belongings are covered by insurance.

In general, most standard homeowners insurance policies do not include earthquake coverage, according to the Ohio Insurance Institute.

The cost of coverage depends on your home’s location, what it is made out of, deductibles, and your insurer.

Earthquake insurance is calculated on a “per $1,000 coverage” basis, and coverage for wood-frame structures is typically cheaper, according to the OII.

In Ohio, the cost for earthquake insurance is about 25 cents per $1,000 on a wood frame home and 47 cents per $1,000 of coverage on a brick home.
