Air conditioning unit triggers smoke inside Washington Twp. Best Western

The source of the smoke inside the Best Western on Old Yankee Street was traced to an air conditioning unit on the roof, according to fire officials on the scene.

The smoke could have been created by a bad belt, and fans may have spread the smoke inside the building, according to officials.

Fire crews were dispatched around 11:58 p.m. after a fire alarm was activated, and a person called 911.

When crews arrived, smoke was found on the second, third and fourth floors, according to firefighters.

Power has been shut off to the unit which controls air in the hallways, according to firefighters.

About 50 to 60 people were evacuated from the hotel. Officials estimate the evacuation lasted up to 45 minutes.

WASHINGTON TWP. — A fire was reported at the Best Western on Old Yankee Street early Wednesday.

Around 11:58 p.m., fire crews were dispatched to the 8000 block of Old Yankee Street.

Ian Strohan was sleeping inside his hotel room when fire alarm woke him.

“The hallway was filled with smoke,” Strohan said. “I got my stuff and got out of there.”
