Fire at vacant Hamilton building called ‘suspicious’

Hamilton fire crews fought fire, arctic temperatures and icy conditions Wednesday at a fire on Heaton Street.

The blaze was reported about 7:10 a.m. at 1001 Heaton, which is a former four-unit apartment building. The building was vacant and the front portion was boarded up, according to Deputy Fire Chief Jay Wirtz.

There were no injuries, but the ice that formed around the scene made it difficult for firefighters to keep their footing, Wirtz said.

Trevor Snider, Hamilton fire investigator, was inside the heavily damaged building Wednesday afternoon. He said the fire is suspicious in nature.

Crews remained on the scene most of the morning, shooting water on the two-story building to make sure all hot spots were extinguished.
