Greeneview teen driver cited in bus crash that injured students

UPDATE @ 1:38 p.m.

A 16-year-old Greeneview High School male student was cited in a crash into a school bus this morning that sent several students to the hospital, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Xenia Post.

The teen driver was taken to the hospital, along with 11 of the 20 school bus passengers, after the crash happened around 7:20 a.m. on Jasper Road near Ohio 72.

Trooper Mark McNeely said the student who caused the crash was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance.

McNeely said investigators still need to interview the bus driver.

District officials report that all the children have been treated and released from the hospital.

UPDATE @ 10:35 a.m.

All of the Greeneview students involved in a school bus crash this morning have all been released from the hospital after getting treatment for minor injuries, according to Superintendent Isaac Seevers.

The bus driver plus 11 high school and middle school students were taken to the hospital and they are all OK, Seevers said.

The driver of the car is a student as well and that person is expected to be OK but is still being assessed at the hospital, Seevers said.

Seevers said he doesn’t have any details yet of how the crash happened.

Emergency crews responded around 7:20 a.m. to the crash between the Greeneview bus and another vehicle on Jasper Road, west of Ohio 72, south of Jamestown.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Xenia Post is investigating and we’re working to gather more details.

EARLIER

A crash this morning involving a Greeneview school bus and another vehicle sent 12 students to the hospital to be checked out for injuries, according to the district.

The crash happened around 7:20 a.m. on Jasper Road just west of the Ohio 72 South intersection in Silvercreek Twp., according to the Greene County emergency dispatch center.

A district employee called 9-1-1 to report the crash and that a medic was needed at the scene, according to the dispatch center.

Greeneview Local Schools issued a statement, stating that bus 33 was involved in a crash while transporting high school and middle school students.

The district expressed gratitude to Premiere Health Network for flying in extra medical staff from Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton to the Jamestown emergency room to assist in the response.

“Twelve students were transported to the hospital to be assessed,” the district’s statement reads.

Officials from Silvercreek, New Jasper and Jefferson townships helped care for students at the scene, according to the district.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Xenia Post is investigating.
