International students add more than $1 billion to Ohio’s economy

Universities worry Trump could shrink pool of potential foreign students

International students contribute more than $30 billion to the U.S. economy, including more than $1.1 billion in Ohio, according to a recent report from the Institute of International Education.

More than 37,700 international students are enrolled in Ohio colleges, according to the report, ranking the state eighth nationally.

Potential impact on local schools

There is a big disparity among the schools themselves, however. Wittenberg University in Springfield, for example, has only 32 international students enrolled. But other colleges welcome thousands annually. Ohio State University leads the pack with 7,117 international students, followed by the University of Cincinnati’s 3,932 students.

Universities are now worried that Donald Trump’s campaign promises to slow immigration into the country could shrink the flow of international students and ultimately their bottom line.

“It would absolutely have a budget impact,” said Jason Reinoehl, vice president of strategic enrollment management at the University of Dayton.

UD has had close to the same number of international students enrolled as it does students from the Dayton metro area since 2014, while Wright State ranks fifth in Ohio with 2,439 international students, according to the Institute for International Education.
