Juvenile discharges firearm at Milton-Union High; Investigation underway

A juvenile discharged a weapon outside Milton-Union High School early Wednesday and the Miami County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the case, according to West Milton police.

Police apprehended the juvenile about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday the juvenile discharged a firearm on school district property, at the west side of the facility in a field between the Lowry Woods and tennis courts, according to a statement posted to the Milton-Union Exempted Village School District web site.

Police removed any threat to the individual and others well in advance of 6 a.m., when the first students were on site, according to the statement.

Police have determined the discharge was an isolated incident.

West Milton Police Chief Harry Busse, in an email, said the village's law director advised to say publicly that "there had been an incident at the school, a shot was fired, a person was in custody, there was no threat to students, and the investigation was ongoing."

The chief met with district Superintendent Brad Ritchey on Thursday afternoon.

Police declined to release any information about the juvenile or the type of firearm used.
