Lane Schnell, an eighth grader at Magsig Middle School in Centerville, qualified for an all-expense-paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee after her victory at the Dayton Area Spelling Bee at Sinclair Community College.

“Scandium,” a chemical element, was Schnell’s competition-winning word, besting 16 other students en route to being placed in the national spotlight.
As a sixth grader, she won her school bee, and last year she placed fifth at the regional bee.
