UPDATE @ 9:51 p.m. 11/14/17: Speed is a factor in a three-vehicle, chain-reaction accident that left one person dead and sent one person to a hospital, Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson said.
According to the preliminary investigation, two vehicles headed south in the 5900 block of Salem Avenue (state Route 49) had just crossed East Westbrook Road when one rear-ended the other at high speed, Wilson said.
The vehicle that was rear-ended was pushed left of center and into the path of a vehicle headed north on Salem, causing a second collision.
The vehicle hit from behind continued down an embankment, the chief said.
A male who was driving the car that started the chain-reaction has been taken to Miami Valley Hospital, where he'll be given tests for drugs and/or alcohol, Chief Wilson said.
The fatality, a woman, was in the vehicle that was pushed onto northbound Salem Avenue.
The third victim, in the vehicle northbound on Salem, was not injured.
No names, hometowns or ages have been released.
Wilson said a traffic reconstruction unit will handle the overall investigation.
