Officer reunited with stolen bagpipes used for memorials

UPDATE @ 2:50 a.m.

A police officer’s bagpipes, used during memorial services, have been found after they were stolen from his car.

Our news partner WCPO-TV in Cincinnati reports the stolen bagpipes were located by a postal worker in Northern Kentucky. The owner of the bagpipes, Steve Watt, was reunited with them on Tuesday.

“Our prayers have been answered,” Watt wrote in a Facebook post. “My bagpipes are back!”

Watt said that some of his possessions were still missing after someone broke into his car Monday night, but his primary concern had been the bagpipes.

FIRST REPORT

A police officer’s honor guard uniform and bagpipes that he uses during memorial services for fallen officers was stolen from his vehicle after a service Monday night.

The cherished items belong to Steve Watt, a retired Hamilton County sheriff’s sergeant who currently works as a Mariemont police officer.

Watt has been playing the bagpipes for 20 to 25 years and every year he performs at the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Memorial, according to fellow bagpiper, retired Montgomery County deputy Del Braund.

Braund said the incident is being communicated to law enforcement across the state in hopes of recovering the items.

“Those pipes have a lot of sentimental value,” he said.
