Pet owners harm animals for drugs

Local veterinarians say people are harming their pets as a way to obtain prescription drugs.

According to Dr. Beth Weisberger with North Main Animal clinic, owners have been bringing in pets with suspicious injuries as a way to get their hands on opioids.

Back in 2013, Ohio law makers approved a bill to stop pet owners who are abusing their animals for drugs and assist veterinarians in identifying these instances.

“It is all about carefully looking at each instance before prescribing medication,” states Dr. Weisberger.

Many of the pain medications that are given to pets are are also used for humans leaving more and more veterinarians to take extra steps when giving prescriptions to animals.

“Some owners even try to make a case for drugs after the pet has recovered”, said Weisberger.  “If the problem continues we will not hesitate to call the police.”
