Richmond police warn McDonalds renovations could cause prostitution shift

Some Richmond business owners have been warned of a potential increase in prostitution complaints once a McDonalds restaurant closes for renovations, according to a letter from Richmond police.

In a letter sent to several business owners and obtained by our news partner Kicks96, Richmond Police Lt. Donnie Benedict said officers have seen an increase of prostitution and related complaints in the area of 17th and East Main Street. Benedict said most of those complaints have originated at or near the McDonalds restaurant at 1725 East Main Street.

“As many of you know, McDonalds will be closing on Sept. 1, 2017 for 90 days to build a new facility,” Benedict said in the letter addressed to business owners. “When they close, this unwanted activity and persons involved will be looking for another location and could move to your place of business.”

Richmond police have invited business owners to attend a brainstorming session on Aug. 30 for police and business owners to meet and discuss the issues.

It was not immediately known if the meeting will be open to the public.
