Washington Mill Road reopened today to traffic at Graff Mill Road after rainfall flooded the road and washed away pavement and gravel.

The Dayton-area rainfall record was shattered for June 23. Nearly 3 inches of rain was recorded in a 24-hour period at the Dayton International Airport. The previous record of just over 1-inch of rain was set in 1896, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Residents in the area said the conditions were dangerous on Friday.

"It was buckets of rain," said resident Kristie Ward. "This whole area flooded almost up to our house."

Eric Miller, Greene County assistant road superintendent, said the damage done to Washington Mill Road was "one of the worst ones I've seen this year as far as blacktop off the road."

One motorist apparently removed one of the road closed signs on Washington Mill Road. Miller said it was dangerous to travel in part because flooding deepened the drop-off on the side of the road.
