Police: Suspect in hedge clipper assault, burglary is in custody

UPDATE @ 4 p.m. (June 4)

Police in Dayton tell us officers have arrested a man suspected of breaking into a woman’s home and assaulting her.

Ronald Collins, 51, is in custody and is being booked into the Montgomery County Jail this afternoon, according to police.

Collins faces charges stemming from a June 1 alleged aggravated burglary on St. Joseph’s Avenue in Dayton.

Sgt. Matt Beavers said a detective spotted Collins walking along South Dixie Drive and recognized him as the man wanted in the incident on St. Joseph’s Avenue.

Collins is scheduled to appear for an arraignment on Monday.

Collins has been arrested multiple times since 2005, ranging from assault and domestic violence allegations. He’s also been convicted of breaking and entering and trespassing in the past. He was just released May 1 from Correctional Reception Center, after serving nine months for a 2016 trespassing conviction.

Dayton Police advised they have issued a warrant for aggravated burglary and robbery with physical harm for Ronald Collins, 51.

Sergeant Beavers of the Dayton Police Department stated the offense started when Collins came knocking on the St. Joseph Avenue residence acting like he wanted to do some work for the victim.

The resident, who is on oxygen and doesn't get around well,  was overpowered by Collins when he forced his way inside, assaulted her and demanded some sex acts to happen.  Before he left, he cut her phone lines and oxygen lines, threatening to kill her if she called the police.

The current charges only list aggravated burglary and robbery, but Police say there was an attempted rape. This charge is going to be presented later on and Dayton Police are still working on the details.

Police report the injuries sustained are serious but non-life threatening. Dayton Police are still searching for Collins and if you have any information regarding his location you are asked to call 937-333-2677.

UPDATE @ 2:33 p.m. (June 2)

A Dayton police report from 1:50 p.m. June 1 indicates this incident was an attempted rape and aggravated burglary on a 79-year-old female victim.

EARLIER REPORT (June 1)

Thursday afternoon the Dayton Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a robbery on the 600 block of St. Joseph Avenue according to Montgomery County Regional Dispatch.

Dispatch is reporting one woman sustained injuries during the robbery and was transported to the hospital. We are working to learn more about this incident and the severity of her injuries. We will update you with the latest developments.
