Sidewalk fixes may cost some Middletown homeowners more than estimated

Some Middletown property owners with defective sidewalks, curbs and gutters will be charged more than original estimates after the only bid for the project came in higher than estimated.

About 30 property owners will be charged $10 to $577 more than the original estimates sent to them in repair notices.

However, about 77 property owners will be charged slightly less than the estimates originally sent to them, according to the city.

City Council will consider an emergency ordinance Tuesday to contract with Adelta Construction for the fixes.

Adelta Construction submitted a bid of $372,966 for the project that will be done in conjunction with the city’s 2017 road reconstruction and repaving program.

Adelta was one of eight companies to review the project, but the only one to submit a bid. Its bid was 7 percent over the city engineer’s original estimate for the project.

Each year, Middletown notifies property owners to make these repairs before the annual street improvement project begins.

City officials said the project schedule means there is no time to seek other bids.
