Son of woman who died during Walmart shooting drowns

Travis Williams was swimming at the lake Sunday when he went under.

The 15-year-old boy who drowned in Madison Lake in Trotwood Sunday was the son of Angela Williams, the woman who died of a heart attack during the fatal Walmart shooting in 2014 in Beavercreek.

Travis Williams, of Fairborn, was the second person with connections to the two victims in the Walmart tragedy to die since that incident.

The girlfriend of the other victim, John Crawford III who was fatally shot by Beavercreek police inside the Walmart, died in a car crash 2015.

Divers and rescuers were called to Madison Lake around 4 p.m. Sunday on a report of a possible drowning.

“Travis jumped in the water and began to have some trouble while swimming,” said Trotwood Police Department Deputy Chief John Porter. “His brother tried to jump in and help him, but he could not get to him.”

Travis’ grandparents confirmed to this news organization Monday that he was Angela Williams’ son, but declined to say anything more about their grandson. Travis would have been a junior at Fairborn High School next school year.

People who were fishing at the lake called 911. Police are investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the drowning, according to Porter.

Angela Williams suffered a fatal heart attack when Beavercreek Police shot and killed Crawford inside of Walmart on Aug 5. 2014. She was running away from the gunfire when she collapsed, according to the Greene County Coroner’s Office. Crawford was carrying an unboxed air rifle he found inside of the store when he was shot.

Crawford’s girlfriend, Tasha Thomas, was killed in a fatal crash on New Year’s Day, 2015. Thomas was a passenger in a car driven by a friend when the gray Pontiac sedan hit a pole at the corner of North Broadway Street and Edgewood Avenue, police said. Thomas and the driver Frederick Bailey, were thrown between 75 and 100 feet away from the vehicle, police said.Thomas was inside of Walmart with Crawford buying groceries for an outdoor party when he was fatally shot.
