Vacant Dayton home catches fire for second time in 3 months

UPDATE@4:40 a.m.:

When firefighters arrived at the scene they immediately went on the defensive because they thought the fire was going to spread to a house next door, said District Chief Adam Landis of the Dayton Fire Department.

They evacuated a family of six in that house and then worked to contain the the blaze on the home that was on fire, he said.

The flames reached some power lines, so DP&L and Vectren were called to the scene as a precaution, he said.

There were no injuries reported and officials have not determined the cause of the fire, Landis said, noting that the same house caught on fire in September.

Update@3:52 a.m.:

Dustin L. Smith said he lives nearby and noticed that the vacant structure at 235 Maryland Avenue was engulfed in flames, he said. He also noticed that a family in another house close by didn’t realize the vacant home was on fire. So he and a friend ran outside and started knocking on doors and windows to alert the residents. However, they wouldn’t come out of their house until firefighters arrived, he said.

Fire crews are working to get the fire under control, and Dayton Power & Light is on the scene.
