3 things to know today about West Liberty school shooting

Here are three things to know today about the West Liberty-Salem school shooting, which happened Friday morning.

1. The victim’s condition is improving

Ryan Cole, father of 16-year-old victim Logan Cole, posted on Facebook Saturday night that his son was doing much better and was even allowed to have visitors after having his breathing tube removed.

2. School resumes for students Tuesday

Classes will resume Tuesday at West Liberty-Salem High School following Friday morning’s shooting, Superintendent Kraig Hissong announced on the district’s website.

The district will be on a one-hour delay on Tuesday, with school starting at 8:35 a.m for middle and high school students and at 8:40 a.m. for elementary students.

3. Details on suspect emerging

The suspect in the West Liberty-Salem shooting has been identified as Ely Ray Serna. Serna, 17, is on the West Liberty-Salem wrestling team. According to the team's Facebook page, Serna competed in a tournament last Saturday and won the 170-pound championship with a 3-0 record.

Serna’s Facebook page has limited access, but shows an updated profile picture of a dog, with the caption “the light of my life.” The photo was uploaded Wednesday night.
