Unusual ‘meso-low’ system moves through Miami Valley Monday

If you look closely at this radar, you can see what appears to be a circulation - almost like a mini-hurricane showing up on radar moving across southeastern Indiana.

You can almost see what appears to be an eye form briefly. While this is not a hurricane or anything close, it sometimes can increase the threat for severe storms.

The term meso-low comes from the word ‘meso’ meaning small scale, and a low which is of a low pressure system.

So basically, a meso-low is just a for small area of low pressure, usually 30 to 50 miles wide. These meso-lows can form from large complexes of thunderstorms that are usually strong or severe.

This system Monday night was part of a weakening line of storms that had earlier been severe in Tennessee and Kentucky - and luckily did not bring severe weather into the Miami Valley.
