Woman dead after being pulled from Greenville Falls

A woman who was taken to the hospital after she was pulled out of a Miami County waterway this afternoon has died from the injuries she sustained after falling in the water.

Toni Fischbach,65, of Wapakoneta, died at the hospital Saturday evening from complications from lack of oxygen, the Miami County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

Emergency crews from Covington and Bradford were called to Greenville Falls State Scenic River Area at about 4 p.m.

Fischbach had fallen into the water about 20 minutes prior to rescuers arriving, according to emergency dispatch information.

"A couple was walking the trails and the woman got too close to the river," said Lt. Mike Whaley of the Miami County Sheriff's Office.

At 4:24 p.m., crews had pulled her out. She was taken to Upper Valley Medical Center, where she later died.

Lt. Whaley commented on the condition of the waters, saying flooding made them more dangerous.

"The river is up right now. We have white caps out in the river, so that's always a danger," he said.

Sheriff's deputies and Covington police are investigating the situation. Deputies do not have any records of other drowning deaths at Greenville Falls in the recent past.

Greenville Falls is located along North Rangeline Road, southwest of Piqua.
