WSU injured basketball player regains feeling in upper body

A Wright State freshman basketball player injured at a college party still requires a ventilator to breathe.

Family and friends gathered at a Cincinnati church this week to to pray for Ryan Custer.

Custer hit his head while diving into a makeshift pool at a Oxford party on April 8. According to police, Custer hit his head on someone’s knee while diving through someone’s legs into a makeshift pool.

The 6-foot-7-inch forward was flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Oxford police said one person was cited at the party for underage drinking, according to police.

Now, relatives say they are overwhelmed with community support.

“Ryan wanted to tell everyone that he is so grateful for all the thoughts and prayers and that he loves you all,” said Custer’s brother Nick Custer.

Custer fractured his C-5 vertebrae and cannot move his legs, according to his family. He has undergone surgery on his spinal cord, but he cannot feel anything below his waist. He has regained feeling in his upper body.

“It’s tough, life’s tough, it requires tough people and that’s what I like about Ryan because he’s tough,” said Wright State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Scott Nagy.

Custer averaged about 10 minutes per game last season.
