Major Kettering road to close next week, for 3 months

The three-month closure of a busy portion of Stroop Road in Kettering is expected to begin sometime next week according to city officials.

Assistant City Manager Steve Bergstresser said the city, county and contractors have a preconstruction meeting scheduled Friday to go over the details of the project. County officials have said the project could begin Monday, but Bergstresser said the decision is weather-dependent.

City officials have said they expect the $1.05 million project, managed by the Montgomery County Engineer’s Office and exectuted by George Igel & Co., to last into December.

A half-mile stretch of Stroop between Woodman Drive and Glenheath Drive will be closed in both directions so that a damaged bridge over the Little Beaver Creek can be replaced. Residents will have access to local side streets to get to and from their homes during the project.

The damage to the bridge was discovered last year during a paving project. Since then traffic over the bridge has been limited to one lane in each direction to keep the load on the bridge under a set weight limit.

City officials are asking drivers to use Woodman Drive and Dorothy Lane to get around the closed road this fall. The project will affect drivers headed to The Greene, the Kettering Recreation Complex, two Kettering schools and numerous businesses.
