Meijer announces $50M makeover of 4 area stores

Meijer is investing $50 million in four of its Dayton-area stores, launching extensive renovations of its “supercenters” in Kettering, Beavercreek, Miami Twp. and Englewood, company officials announced today.

Work on all four stores will begin this month and will be completed in phases so the stores can remain open during construction, Meijer officials said. Each of the stores will add a drive-through pharmacy, build a new facade and remodel its gas stations, among other improvements.

“We are pleased to reinforce our commitment to Dayton,” Meijer co-chairman Hank Meijer said in a release. “Our customers expect high standards from us, and our investment in these stores will ensure they enjoy the best shopping experience we can provide.”

The planned projects in Kettering and Beavercreek became public earlier this month after company officials filed preliminary plans to the planning and zoning commissions of each city. But officials with the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based company had declined to comment on the projects until this morning’s announcement encompassing the broader Dayton area and detailing the Miami Twp. and Englewood store projects.

The plans submitted to Kettering city officials call for the retailer to add 4,400 square feet to its store at East Stroop Road and Wilmington Pike, including the addition of a drive-through window for a pharmacy and a new employee entrance, bringing the store to 204,175 square feet. Similar plans were submitted to Beavercreek officials for the store on Colonel Glenn Highway near Wright State University.

Meijer officials said the remodeled supercenters will boast reconfigured floor plans that will allow for expanded selections in departments throughout the store. The new pharmacies will be relocated near the front of the stores, and a new “Baby Center” will cater to expectant parents.

The projects also call for upgraded heating, refrigeration and lighting fixtures, upgraded bathrooms, modernized electronics sections, redesigned check-out and self-scan lanes, and revamped photo centers.
