Miami Twp. trustee race attracts 5 candidates, including 3 challengers

Five candidates – including two incumbents – are seeking a pair of seats on the Miami Twp. Board of Trustees.

Don Culp, John Morris and Zebulon Music are seeking to unseat Eric Flasher and Andrew Papanek for the four-year seats with annual compensation of about $20,000 a year, according to the township.

Papanek is seeking re-election to a second term. Flasher was appointed this spring when Robert Matthews Jr. resigned to accept a job with a firm the township has done business with.

Culp and Morris also applied for the vacancy created by Matthews’ resignation. Here is a brief look at each candidate:

CULP

Age: 53

Education: Bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, bachelor's degree in French, Iowa State University.

Occupation: Engineer.

FLASHER

Age: 54

Education: Bachelor's degree in business, Miami University.

Occupation: Miami Twp. trustee; formerly: senior data analyst at Quest Diagnostics; senior developer, Reynolds & Reynolds, computer analyst IV, DP&L.

MORRIS

Age: 48

Education: Master's degree in economics, education, entrepreneurship; bachelor's degree in business marketing

Occupation: Non-profit education executive.

MUSIC

Age: 32

Education: Information technology degree.

Occupation: Data storage customer support engineer.

PAPANEK

Age: 78

Education: Associate's degree in applied science, FBI National Academy, National Sheriff's Institute.

Occupation: Township trustee, vice president of Anderson Security Inc., 38.5-year law enforcement career.
