Miamisburg teen killed by train triggered police swarm, report shows

Two waves of police crews responded to the Miamisburg scene where a Centerville High School junior was struck and killed by a train, staying on site for several hours, documents show.

Four police units were dispatched to the 400 block of East Linden Avenue just after 7:40 p.m. Friday after authorities received a 9-1-1 call in the accident that killed 16-year-old Joseph Fernandez of Miamisburg, according to a Miamisburg Police Department report obtained Tuesday morning.

Four additional units followed those initial officers about 20 minutes later, being called after police were getting a better understanding for the scope of the scene, according to the report.

The 9-1-1 caller initially indicated their “friend got hit by a train” before revealing a minute later “Joseph laid on the tracks on got run over,” the police report states.

A relative of the teen and 9-1-1 records indicate Fernandez was struck by the Norfolk Southern train seeking to duplicate a stunt he had seen on a YouTube video.

Police were on the scene until about 12:15 a.m., according to the police report.

The report was released Tuesday morning after this news organization requested Miamisburg Police Department documents involving the death of Fernandez.

“We’re in the middle of the investigation, and we’re not going to release those things in the middle of the investigation,” Miamisburg Police Chief John Sedlak said in a voicemail message.

Attempts to talk with Sedlak on Tuesday morning were unsuccessful.

The department is still working to discover more information, Cindi Threlkeld of the Miamisburg Police Department said Monday.

“We want to stress the importance of how dangerous railroad tracks are,” she said. “Not only is walking on them dangerous, it’s also a crime.”

A memorial gathering for Fernandez is scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Routsong Funeral Home, 81 N. Main St., Centerville, according to his obituary.
