Middletown private school goes on lockdown after man attempts entry

A man was questioned by Middletown Police today after he tried to enter a local school, forcing the school into lockdown.

Dawn Pickerill, principal of the St. John XXIII Catholic School, sent a message out to school families Friday morning stating: “This morning at approximately 8:39 an unknown gentleman buzzed to enter the school and asked to come in to the building to go to the bathroom.”

“We denied his request and he continued to try to open various doors. As a precaution, we went into lock down and called the police who apprehended the man as he was walking up University Blvd,” wrote Pickerill, whose school enrolls 409 students in kindergarten through 8th grade at 3806 Manchester Road.

“Due to our recent camera expansion, we were able to show the police the video, which made it very easy for them to find him. We released from lock down at approximately 9:05 a.m. The police commended us for how well the situation was handled. The students believed through it all that we were just in a drill and behaved exactly as we have instructed them to do. We are back to business as usual,” she said.

Middletown Police were not immediately available to provide details on the man’s status.

St. John XXIII was created in 1972 as a combined entity to serve all students in the area who were attending the local Catholics Schools of Holy Trinty, St. John’s and St. Mary’s.
