MEDWAY — Two men were hospitalized Thursday, Sept. 17, after one man was pinned under a riding mower and another man trying to save him reportedly suffered a heart attack.

Clarence Hoke, 64, of Clayton, was cutting grass with a riding mower at a property in the first block of Victory Safety Lane around 2 p.m. Thursday when the machine tipped over, said Sgt. Mike Young, Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

“He was near an incline next to a lake on the property,” said Young.

Hoke was wearing a seat belt and was pulled into the water, Young said.

Witnesses nearby saw the accident and called 911. Hoke was submerged and trapped underneath the mower for several minutes while help arrived, said Young.

Another man, whose name was not available Thursday, assisted deputies in pulling the mower from the water and suffered chest pains.

“It’s a possible heart attack, he had difficulty breathing,” said Young.

Hoke was resuscitated and both men were taken to Grandview Hospital in Dayton. Hoke was listed in critical condition Friday morning. The second man’s condition was unknown.
