LAS VEGAS — U.S. Sens. Harry Reid and Dean Heller are shedding political donations amid reports that a Nevada developer and lobbyist is the target of a federal campaign finance investigation.
Heller's communications director said Tuesday the Republican Nevada senator will donate to charity some $26,700 he received from Harvey Whittemore.
A Reid spokeswoman said money donated to the Senate majority leader had been given to charity, but wouldn't provide an amount.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal, citing anonymous sources, reported that the FBI is investigating whether employees of Whittemore's former company contributed to political campaigns and were illegally reimbursed with company money.
FBI officials would not confirm the investigation. But a source with knowledge confirmed the probe to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publically.
