Nina Turner turns down VP offer on Green Party ticket

The former Ohio senator had supported Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.

Former state Sen. Nina Turner, a Cleveland Democrat who became one of the top supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ recent presidential campaign, has rejected a request to serve as running mate for the Green Party’s presidential ticket.

Turner confirmed to Cleveland.com that she would not serve as the running mate for Massachusetts doctor Jill Stein, the party’s presumptive presidential nominee. Stein reportedly reached out with the offer.

Turner, 48, a 2014 Ohio secretary of state candidate and former Cleveland City Council member who initially favored Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, decided last fall to switch her support to Sanders, a Vermont independent who ran as a Democrat.

Her decision to switch to Sanders roiled Democratic Party leaders and culminated last week in Philadelphia, when Turner’s speaking role at the convention was reportedly stripped from her. Among those who protested the move was actress and Sanders supporter Susan Sarandon, who said the decision to pull Turner’s speaking slot “is upsetting to us.”

Turner did not return a request for comment Monday. A spokesman for the Green Party said the party had “no information” on Stein’s choice of running mate yet, and Stein on Twitter said she had not yet selected a running mate, though she was in talks with “several strong candidates.”

Turner’s supporters had pushed for her selection, posting on Twitter as #RunNinaRun. An online petition advocating her selection had garnered more than 2,000 signatures as of Monday afternoon.
