IKEA recalls millions of drawers after third child is killed

The death of another toddler after an IKEA drawer toppled over has led IKEA US to issue a recall for its Malm range of chest of drawers and wardrobes. Another 100 other models of chests and drawers were also recalled.

"We are announcing this recall today given the recent tragic death of a third child. It is clear that there are still unsecured products in customers' homes, and we believe that taking further action is the right thing to do," the company said in a statement Monday.

In April, the company issued another warning to families when Apple Valley, Minnesota, toddler Theodore "Ted" McGee, 22-months-old, was the third child killed when an IKEA Malm dresser toppled over.

The first warning was issued by IKEA US in 2015 when both 2-year-old Pennsylvania boy and a 2-year-old child from Washington died when a drawer toppled over.

After McGee's death, IKEA began offering a free wall-anchoring service for the drawers.

IKEA said it had been in "close contact" with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The organization declined to comment on the IKEA recall, but previously said that every 24 minutes, a child is sent to the emergency room by a falling piece of furniture or a television. CPSC said every two weeks, a child dies as a result of toppling furniture.

The recall affects children's chests and dressers taller than 23.5 inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29.5 inches that do not meet the performance requirements of the U.S. voluntary industry standard. The products recalled are 3-drawer, 4-drawer, 5-drawer and 6-drawer models that were sold between January 2002 and June 2016. NBC News reported at least 29 million chests and drawers as being included in the recall.

IKEA said that customers who had purchased any of the recalled products can receive a full or partial refund or a free wall-anchoring repair kit.

Tuesday morning the company also asked consumers to stop using any of the recalled products that are not properly anchored to the wall and placed in an area not accessible to children.
