PYRMONT, Montgomery Co. —

Smoldering insulation in a home’s attic area was the suspected cause of a late Tuesday night fire that evacuated two families, firefighters said.

Firefighters had a difficult time battling the fire at the building due to the construction of the home, Brookville Fire Chief Ronald Fletcher said. There were no traditional attic spaces or attic access areas for firefighters to discover where the fire was located, Fletcher said.

The nature of the fire fight required crews to use thermal imaging cameras to find a source of the blaze, Fletcher said.

Multiple departments responded to the house, 15011 Brookville-Pyrmont Pike, shortly before 11 p.m. Firefighters from mutual aid departments assisted in trucking in water to the fire location, due to the area not having any fire hydrants, according to Fletcher.

An electrical issue is believed to be the preliminary cause of the fire, but an investigator was requested to determine an official cause.

Firefighters said following an initial check, the home did not appear to have any smoke detectors. The family was alerted to the fire after they smelled smoke and saw discolored paint in the residence, Fletcher said.

A firefighter on the scene was injured after he slipped and fell. His injuries were not serious, but he was transported to the hospital as a precaution, according to Fletcher.

A damage estimate from the blaze was not immediately available.
