Alleged gang members have long criminal histories

DAYTON —

Three members of an alleged local gang named in Wednesday’s 22-count federal indictment have extensive criminal records that in one case stretches back to his early teens, according to police and court records.

The criminal activity includes drug possession and selling, gun possession and violence that escalated over time. The three Dayton men are among nine of whom were named in the indictment. Overall, 12 of 13 men that the Safe Streets Task Force says are in the Zone 6/Bottle Poppin’ Network are in custody. One died in a traffic accident last month, according to the task force.

“That’s the bulk of this group,” said Dayton FBI Supervisory Agent Tim Ferguson.

Here are the three members:

Sherman A. Brown, 23, who faces 10 weapons, drug and conspiracy charges: He was first arrested at 14 when police spotted him in possession of a .38-caliber revolver when police said he was acting as security for an open air drug transaction in 2003.Two years later, Brown was convicted of aggravated robbery involving a firearm and sentenced to three years in prison.

Three years later, he was convicted of drug possession (heroin) and as a felon possessing a firearm. He was sentenced to a concurrent 6 months for the drug charge and one year for the weapons charge.

By 2011, he was being watched by the Community Initiative to Reduce Gun Violence and the Safe Streets Task Force. Twice he was arrested on drugs and weapons charges. One of those arrests was for attempting to elude police by driving 60 mph through a Dayton neighborhood before his rental car slammed into a curb. Brown, along with other alleged Zone 6 members, was captured in a foot chase by street officers. Drugs and cash were found in the car, according to police records.

Steven L. “Steve-O” Mayberry, 21, who faces conspiracy and drug charges: He was identified as the main suspect in a 2009 homicide. Later, at age 18, he was convicted of threatening to kill a witness. Mayberry was never charged in the homicide case, according to Montgomery County Common Pleas Court records. In 2010, Mayberry was sentenced to 18 months in prison on weapons charges. He is in federal custody on conspiracy and drug charges.

Tyler “BG” Hamilton, 20, shot and killed a 19-year-old Hillsboro man last year in Harrison Twp. during an argument in his car over a drug sale. He was not listed in the indictment because he already is in jail on earlier state charges. Prosecutors declined to charge Hamilton because of the state’s Castle Doctrine, which allows a person to defend themselves against attack in their house or vehicle.

Police describe the Zone 6/BKN gang, which is charged in the federal indictment with drug and weapons counts, as a violent crime enterprise that bought heroin by the kilo, selling off smaller portions on the street and from three stash houses. Authorities seized more than $45,000 in cash, 10 large-caliber handguns and 10 assault-style rifles.

The FBI-led Safe Streets Task Force, which included Dayton police and Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies, targeted the group, gathering intelligence through surveillance and other means before swooping in beginning July 10 to make arrests. Dayton Police Chief Richard Biehl and Sheriff Phil Plummer said several gang members are being investigated as “potential suspects” in several homicides and violent armed robberies.

Federal court appearances have not yet been scheduled.
