A look at police shootings since 1996

The shooting of an undercover Dayton police officer in Trotwood early Saturday was the first time an officer was injured by gunfire in the area since the 2011 New Year’s Day shootout at Enon Beach that resulted in the death of a Clark County Sheriff’s deputy and injury to a German Twp. officer.

Saturday’s shooting represents the first Dayton officer hit by gunfire since 2008 according to Dayton Daily News records. A previous Dayton Daily News report that this was the first Dayton officer shot since 2003 was incorrect. An officer was shot in the shoulder June 23, 2008 by a homeowner on Henry Street.

The most recent incident of a civilian injured by officer gunfire was in Trotwood on March 25. Officer Ron Smith shot Denton “Eddie” Little, 40, twice in the torso after police say Little failed to comply with the officer’s orders while being questioned about jaywalking. Little is recovering from his injuries.

2011

Jan. 1: Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Suzanne Waughtel Hopper, 40, was shot to death, a German Twp. police officer wounded and the gunman killed at an Enon Beach shootout early New Year’s Day.

Hopper, a married mother of two, was killed after she responded to a report of shots fired into one of the trailers at Enon Beach.

German Twp. Patrolman Jeremy Blum was wounded in a gunfight with the shooter, Michael L. Ferryman, as police moved in to pull Hopper out and disarm the gunman. Blum suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and shoulder. Ferryman died during the shootout with officers.

2010

June 11: Dayton police officers Johnathan J. Miniard and Zackary E. Farkas shot 18-year-old motorist, Marlon J. Wilkinson Jr., several times after he struck one of them with a car that had been reported stolen. This was the first officer-involved shooting in Dayton since 2008.

Nov. 18: Dayton police shot and seriously wounded a suspected pizza delivery robber in the 1500 block of Superior Avenue. The 17-year-old suspect was hit two or three times by bullets fired by two officers, who were part of an effort to apprehend a person believed to have robbed pizza delivery drivers in the past.

2008

May 9: Lary Labensky, 44, was shot and killed by police after a chase ending in the backyard of a house in Harrison Twp.

May 15: Derrick Jordan, 22, died after being shot in the head by undercover police while in a car on Edwin C. Moses Boulevard involved in a suspected drug buy.

May 27: Alexander Muela, 35, survived being shot multiple times by Dayton police officers when he appeared in a Delaware Avenue doorway with a shotgun in hand.

June 23: Dayton Police Officer Darrell Herron was shot in the shoulder by a homeowner on Henry Street. Investigators said it appeared the man mistook the officer for a subject who had recently burglarized his unoccupied properties.

July 19: Ricky Moore, 35, was shot and killed by Dayton police officers during a struggle on West Parkwood Avenue.

2007

June 29: A man who apparently fired a rifle at two police officers when all three faced off near a garage was killed when the officers returned gunfire. The victim, identified only as white and in his 50s, died at the scene, 1731 Gondert Ave.

2005

Sept. 13: A Dayton police officer shot and critically wounded a man armed with a semi-automatic handgun after police department supervisors said the man repeatedly ignored officers’ commands to get out of his car in the 1600 block of North Main Street. The car had been involved in a police chase earlier.

May 21: Donald Schwartz, 79, was shot and killed by Dayton police Officer Jack W. Simpson. Police said Schwartz fired several times at Simpson and ignored several warnings to put down his revolver. Police received a 911 call from a neighbor who said Schwartz made threats and brandished a gun.

June 13: Rennie “Robby” Moore, 27, of Dayton was shot and killed by Montgomery County sheriff’s Detective Shawn Baab. Baab, 34, said Moore tried to strike him with his minivan in the parking lot of the Economy Inn and Lounge in Harrison Twp.

2003

May 24: Shawn L. Robinson shot Dayton Officer Christopher Cornwell in the chest at 104 Central Ave. Cornwell, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, returned fire, striking Harold L. Wells in the leg. Wells, 35, bled to death.

2002

Aug. 25: Dayton Officer Mary Beall succumbed to a gunshot wound received on May 15, 2000, when a suspect she was attempting to negotiate with shot her execution style. She and several other officers had responded to a call of a man firing a gun at his girlfriend. When they arrived, they encountered the armed suspect. As other officers covered her, Beall knelt down in an attempt to talk the man into surrendering. As she did so, the suspect, Raham Twitty, stuck his .30 caliber handgun in her neck and fired. Beall’s partner and other officers returned fire, wounding Twitty. Twitty was sentenced to 76 years in prison; he died in prison from natural causes in 2010.

Oct. 30: A Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed Keshia Jamel Newell, 32, of Jefferson Twp., outside the Dayton Municipal Court building after he shot a deputy.

2001

Oct. 24: Dayton Officer Michael Lally fatally shot Tayvone Kinney, 17, as he tried to arrest Kinney in the theft of a motor vehicle in a Kroger parking lot at 900 Gettysburg Ave.

May 7: Dayton Officer Mitchell Koogler fatally shot Cleophis Craver, 20, of Dayton at the Summit Square Townhouse Apartments. Police said Craver had fired his gun at another man, then raised it toward Koogler.

Feb. 23: Dayton Officer Stephen Clark shot and killed burglary suspect Robert L. Hale, 39, of Harrison Twp. after police said he tried to back over Officer Wendy Stiver at a construction site at 4145 Cloud Park Drive.

Jan. 14: Dayton officers Joseph C. Oldman and John Sullivan fatally shot David P. Geisler at Apple and Main streets. Geisler, 28, who had been charged in a Huber Heights bank robbery, rammed Oldman’s cruiser and tried to run over Sullivan.

1999

July 7: Dayton officers Michael Robinson and Michael August and Alonzo Freeman Jr. were wounded in a shootout at 352 Chicahominy Ave. August, who was 41, was struck in the chest with a blast from Freeman’s 9 mm rifle. A bulletproof vest saved his life. Robinson, who was 26 and also in a vest, was wounded in four places, and Freeman, 19 at the time of the shooting, survived five wounds, including two to the chest. Only Robinson returned fire.

1998

April 25: Trotwood officers William Osmanski and Gregg Saylor shot and killed Anthony O. Carmichael near the Salem Mall after Carmichael shot Leonard McIntyre.

1997

Aug. 22: Dayton Officer Rick J. Smith shot and killed Christopher Bacher outside the Wayland Avenue home of Bacher’s mother. Witnesses said Bacher was armed with a knife. Bacher emerged from the house and lunged at Smith, who fired. Police later said Bacher did not have the knife when he was shot.

July 27: Ohio Highway Patrol Trooper Angela R. Watson exchanged gunfire with a hitchhiker on Interstate 70 in Preble County. Watson was wounded, and the hitchhiker, George Snyder, was killed. A medical exam determined Snyder killed himself with a gunshot to the head after Watson wounded him.

1996

May 23: Officer Jason Grossnickle was shot and killed in an ambush as he arrived for work. He and another officer were walking through the department’s parking lot towards the back door when a man exited a stolen delivery truck and opened fire on both officers. Grossnickle was struck and killed instantly. The other officer was shot in the jaw but was able to return fire and killed the suspect.
