A former Enon treasurer who now faces embezzlement charges could have her retirement payments impacted by the case.

Debra Maurer, 48, of 150 S. Harrison St., was arrested Thursday night by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly embezzling $40,000 from the village and altering village financial records between 2008 and 2012.

She was set to be arraigned Friday morning before Acting Judge John Butz, who is filling in temporarily for Judge Eugene Nevius. However, due to a conflict of interest, the case was transferred to Judge Thomas Trempe.

Maurer pleaded not guilty to the third-degree felony counts of theft in office and tampering with evidence. She posted the $5,000 bond Thursday night.

Because of Maurer’s public employee status as a former Greenon Local Schools teacher and Enon treasurer, she is receiving payments from the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System. The system will be notified of her arrest, and it’s possible a hold could be placed on her payments. As outlined in the Ohio Revised Code, these payments could be used to pay restitution if Maurer were found guilty, said Clark County Sheriff’s Office Major Russell Garman.

According to court records, Maurer allegedly deposited village funds into personal bank accounts and altered Enon’s financial records to conceal the theft. She also failed to return financial records when her term ended as treasurer March 31, 2012.

Village officials reported a discrepancy of more than $227,700 in its books to the sheriff’s office in September, which launched the investigation. The sheriff’s office worked with the Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations to review documents and electronics seized from Maurer’s home when a search warrant was executed in September.

Chief Deputy Carl Loney said the investigation is ongoing, and it’s possible Maurer could face additional charges.

The case is expected to be presented to a Clark County grand jury for review.
