A Centerville High School teacher and former coach facing three felony counts of sexual battery against a former student has been placed on paid administrative leave, according to district officials.

Michael C. Weaver, a government teacher and former girls’ golf coach, posted $75,000 bond shortly after his booking Friday night, according to Greg Flannagan of the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

The prosecutor’s office said Friday that an adult female victim reported alleged sexual activity between Weaver and herself during her sophomore year at the high school to the Centerville Police Department, which investigated the complaint during the past couple weeks.

Centerville police said the alleged acts occurred during the 2005-06 school year, and none reportedly occurred on school grounds.

A warrant was issued for Weaver, who was picked up at his Washington Twp. home Friday afternoon and taken to the Montgomery County Jail.

Weaver, 43, appeared in Kettering Municipal Court on Monday. Court records show he did not enter a plea and that his preliminary hearing was set for 10 a.m. Jan. 15.

That hearing is expected to determine whether his case will be moved to the grand jury.

Weaver, who is married and could not be reached for comment, is in his 12th year of teaching at Centerville High School.

“We were all shocked and saddened by the story,” said Brian Cayot, president of the Centerville teachers’ union. “Mike is a great teacher, and I would want to withhold comment and judgment until he has had his due process.”

Flannagan said the sexual battery charges are fifth-degree felonies. According to the Ohio Revised Code, fifth-degree felonies carry prison sentences of six to 12 months.
