VANDALIA —

Police are sending a counterfeit $10 bill passed at a Taco Bell on Wednesday during the lunch rush to the Secret Service for further investigation.

Sgt. Gary Jackson said management at the fast food restaurant on East National Road told police the paper money, which appeared to be crude and not well produced, was used during a lunch purchase.

The volume of customers during the time period made it impossible to give police a description of who might have passed the currency, Jackson said.

He said it is normal protocol in such cases to send the evidence on to the Secret Service, which will determine what happens next in the investigation.

Management at the local store declined comment and referred questions to Taco Bell’s corporate offices.

The company’s public affairs office, from Irvine, Calif., issued the following statement Wednesday evening: “Our restaurant general manager followed company protocol and immediately contacted the police to turn over the counterfeit bills in hopes of helping with the investigation.”
