URBANA — Five people, including Matthew Puccio, were indicted by a Champaign County grand jury on Thursday for their roles in the death of an Urbana woman whose dismembered remains were found in the bathroom of her Light Street home and near Covington, Ky.

Puccio, 25, of Urbana, is accused of killing Jessica Rae Sacco, 21, in the home they shared at 625 W. Light St.

Puccio was indicted on nine charges, including aggravated murder, felonious assault, gross abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and possession of criminal tools.

Puccio admitted to the crime in an interview earlier this week, saying he stabbed her in the abdomen with her help, and then suffocated her with a plastic bag several hours later.

Four other people were also indicted in connection with Sacco’s death. They include Christopher Wright, 37, Sharon Cook, 25, both of Urbana, and Andrew Forney, 26, and Kandis Forney, 25, of Michigan. They four were accused of helping Puccio dispose of Sacco’s body and eventually disposing of her remains in parts of southern Ohio and northern Kentucky.

Andrew Forney was indicted on 11 charges that included failure to report a crime, gross abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and obstructing justice. Kandis Forney faces seven counts of similar charges, while Wright and Cook face six counts each.

No trial dates have been set in the case.

In an interview Wednesday, Puccio said he and Sacco argued frequently, and their relationship had begun to deteriorate further. He said they began to argue about a series of text messages the night of her murder and he held a knife over her abdomen while she pulled it into her own stomach.

Puccio also said Sacco had sent text messages and had tried to hire someone to kill him. However, those who knew Sacco have said that was unlikely, and described her as a sweet woman who was sometimes bullied by others.

Puccio said he knew it was only a matter of time before he was caught, and had decided that he would admit the crime to authorities once he was caught.

“I’ll get caught one day and I’ll admit to it then.” Puccio said. “For now I just need to accept what I’ve done.”

He also said he believes he deserves the death penalty for the crime.

“Why should I live when she doesn’t get that right,” he said of Sacco.

A candlelight vigil is planned for Sacco at 7 p.m. Saturday in front of her home on Light Street.
