SPRINGFIELD —

A 27-year-old Springfield man accused of raping a 6-year-old boy will spend the next 10 years in prison.

DeAndre Paris was sentenced Tuesday in Clark County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to one count of rape earlier this month. It was part of a plea agreement with the Clark County prosecutor.

He was arrested March 31 for raping a boy he knows at a family member’s home, according to court documents.

Paris has no prior history of sexual assaults. His attorney, Shawn Thomas, told Judge Douglas Rastatter before sentencing that Paris has been battling issues linking back to his adoption as an infant and years of substance abuse. It’s likely he was intoxicated at the time of the rape, and Thomas said his client has no memory of the assault.

“By all the witnesses that we talked to, (he was) under the influence of drugs or alcohol and was at a high level of intoxication,” Thomas said. “It’s not a defense to the matter but it does point to some mitigation.”

A female family member told investigators Paris returned to the home after drinking and fell asleep in a chair with the boy next to him. She also fell asleep on the couch. She awoke when the boy said Paris was hurting him and she told Springfield police she witnessed Paris inappropriately involved with the child.

Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Brian Driscoll, who wasn’t allowed to speak during the sentencing as part of the deal, said he and the victim’s family are pleased with the sentence.

“The whole reason we agreed to that deal is because we were sure a lengthy sentenced would be handed down,” Driscoll said.

Paris will have to register as a sex offender upon release from prison and will be on post-release control for five years.
