FAIRBORN —

A mother has been arrested in the death of her three-week-old infant back in August.

Cassandra Lewis, 20, faces possible charges of involuntary manslaughter, endangering children and tampering with evidence. All three charges are third degree felonies.

She was arrested Friday and is being held in the Greene County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

Her daughter was found deceased by fire and police personnel when they arrived at Lewis’ Franklin Court address Aug. 24.

Fairborn Police Sgt. Paul Hicks said police believe Lewis rolled over and accidentally suffocated the infant. She discovered the baby was unconscious when she woke up, he said.

In 911 recordings from that day, Lewis can be heard telling a dispatcher that she rolled over on the infant in her sleep.

“I need to be reported,” she said. “My baby’s body is already bruising.” She also tells the dispatcher that the baby was born three weeks premature.

“There are some underlying circumstances that will be used in court,” Hicks said when asked about the mother’s conduct and why she is being charged.

He did not go in to detail about why Lewis’ conduct may have contributed to the baby’s death.

Lewis also has a 2-year-old son who is in custody of his grandmother, Hicks said.
